For over thirty years, I was a hairdresser. Women sat in my chair and talked about their families and how getting dressed no longer felt as simple as it once had.

I learned something: women weren't asking to look younger. They simply wanted to look in the mirror and still recognize themselves.

On my days off, I wandered through little shops. I loved their warmth — and the woman behind the counter who remembered your name.

Every fall, I escaped to the Okanagan. Somewhere between the golden hills and the lake, I would finally slow down. Every year, I whispered the same word: someday.

Then one afternoon, I saw a little shop for sale near Okanagan Lake. Before I could talk myself out of it, I signed the papers. That was seven wonderful years ago.

Customers became familiar faces. I learned the colours they loved and the pieces that made them feel like themselves. It felt like being behind my salon chair again.

But keeping a small shop open has become harder each year. At sixty-six, I'm not ready to let this dream go.
