For over thirty years, I was a hairdresser. Women sat in my chair and talked about their families, the years passing, and how getting dressed no longer felt as simple as it once had.

I learned something: women weren’t asking to look younger. They simply wanted to look in the mirror and still recognize themselves.

Every fall, I escaped to Stowe, Vermont. Somewhere between the changing leaves and the Green Mountains, something in me would finally slow down. And every year, I whispered the same word: someday.

Seven years ago, a little boutique became available in Stowe. Before I could talk myself out of it, I signed the papers.

I left the salon behind, moved to Vermont, and opened the door to Susan’s Stowe for the very first time.

Now I’m sixty-six, and it’s time to retire.

Not because something went wrong.

Because something went beautifully right. I’m wise enough to know when a story has reached its ending.

This is my retirement sale. Every piece I ever chose for this boutique was chosen with one woman in mind: the real one, not the one on the hanger. That hasn’t changed.
